Masimanyane’s public educators have been reconnecting with members of the Human Rights Club this week in an attempt to attract more learners to the group.
According to Zintle Balfour, Masimanyane has been visiting the twelve schools that participated last year to arrange a schedule for future meetings.
“The aim is for them to give us a time slot to work with them during the week. We also want them to recruit new learners as we are wanting to expand the club.”
Apart from adding more high schools to the roster, Masimanyane is also looking to include primary school learners to the programme. This will allow learners to form meaningful relationships with Masimanyane’s educators over a number of years.
“It will be good to include them from young because they can grow up with us. They can have an understanding of human rights issues from an early age,” said Balfour.
Balfour also mentioned that being a member of the club has academic advantages.
“One principal said to me that the club could help increase the pass rate. Being a member gives learners more focus and discipline. The activities we do with them are meant to challenge them and use their thinking skills,” she said.
The club has few male members and Balfour hopes that the number of boys that join will increase this year. However, according to Balfour, signs of improvement were evident in Grahamstown when 75 boys attended a workshop late last year.
