Commission for Gender Equality releases investigative report into SA shelters
The Commission for Gender Equality has released its highly anticipated investigative report into the state of shelters in South Africa.
The investigation looked into the state of shelters for victims of violence, particularly victims of gender-based violence (GBV), and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and intersex (LGBTI) communities in all nine provinces.
Among its main findings were:
a lack of adequate funding for shelters;
inadequate infrastructure and security in some buildings;
late payments and/or lack of cooperation;
a lack of standardised salaries ;
lack of transitional housing; and
poor management of compliance with policies and legislation.
